Crankset
The crankset is actually the name for the total of bottom bracket, chainrings and cranks. The latter are the "arms" into which you screw the pedals. The crank is mounted in the bottom bracket, which allows it to rotate. A crank has a number of characteristics. First of all, cranks are often brand-specific. This means that a SRAM crank belongs to a SRAM group (for example in combination with SRAM chainrings). But the crank must also be combined with the correct bottom bracket. For example, a SRAM Dub crank must be combined with a DUB bottom bracket. And, the width of the crank axle must match the width of the bottom bracket (possibly in combination with spacers, intended to realize the correct chain line). In addition, cranksets are available in different sizes, e.g. 172.5 mm. This refers to the length of the crank arms (measured from the center of the crank to the center of the thread for the pedal). And, cranks are available with different chainrings (e.g. 35 as smallest in combination with 48 tooth chainring as largest). Nowadays many cranks can also be bought in a version with power meter.
Difficulty levelDifficulty level
Mounting and dismounting a crank is an average difficult job. In this blog I will explain how to do it. I recommend dismounting the crank once every 12 months. This prevents the crank from getting so stuck that you can no longer or very difficultly get it loose. It is also advisable to regularly check the crank for play.
